“in January 2020 the Trump administration released its “Peace to Prosperity” plan (aka ‘Deal of the Century’) that offered a solution to the Israel-Palestine impasse. This plan was welcomed by the Israeli (Netanyahu) government and rejected by the Palestinian National Authority. Supporters of the plan felt that it offered the Palestinians a fair deal and the chance to move on from historical claims. Opponents felt that the deal disproportionately favoured Israel and ignored the key demands of the Palestinians. The plan was put together by a team led by President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. An overview of the plan and links to the complete document can be found here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/peacetoprosperity/ Your task: You are to prepare a media talking point strategy for spokespersons needing to comment on the Peace to Prosperity Plan. You will do this either from the Israeli perspective or that of the Palestinian National Authority. This document will be used by government and non-government spokespeople who are being interviewed by the media, writing op-eds, blogging and so forth. It is aimed at offering a unified and coherent response that outlines your chosen side’s official position. You are providing something of a script for your spokespeople as well as general advice on how to discuss the plan. You may include any information or sub-sections you think relevant but the following main sections are mandatory: General advice and comments on your side’s position (e.g. We support/reject this plan because….) Main talking points that are important to your side (e.g. Settlements, security, economics). Note that you will not have room to cover every aspect of the plan within the word limit. Focus on what you think are the critical messages. Rebuttals or ways to deal with likely criticisms or tricky questions (e.g. International law, Human Rights, Terrorism….) Sources: The Plan itself is an obvious starting point. Make sure you have a proper read of it rather than just a scan. You should also familiarise yourself with what your chosen side has said publicly so far. For example, look at what Benjamin Netanyahu or Mahmoud Abbas have said in media interviews and speeches. The Israel Project’s 2009 Global Language Dictionary (in the weekly readings for the lecture on Media) is a good source for the way that pro-Israel language is constructed. For Palestinians you could try the PNA’s Ministry of Information https://www.minfo.ps/Home/Change?lang=En or their Ministry of Foreign Affairs https://www.mofa.pna.ps/en-us/ (lots of the PNA website links seem to get broken so you may have to research a bit yourself). Both sides will have plenty of non-government lobby groups that will have resources too, such as AIPAC or American Muslims for Palestine. You may use maps or other graphics in your document but this is not compulsory.
