Software-defined networking (SDN) is a type of technology used for cloud computing that enables configuration of a network which helps enhance the network’s performance and monitorability. Programming becomes easier with SDN as it decouples control over a network. SDN has an extension called Software-defined wide area network ( SD-WAN) which covers a wider geographical area. SD-WAN enables a business to be able to connect its networks to other businesses in a large area.( Kreutz, Ramos, Verissimo, Rothenberg, Azodolmolky & Uhlig, 2015).
SDN assists in troubleshooting SDN is mainly characterized by being a directly programmable architecture, adjustable network traffic flow making it agile, has controllers in form of a software which manages the network centrally and has programs that configure the network quickly so s the SDN network can be optimized, secured and managed automatically. The SDN controllers simply the networks’ designs and how it operated because of the present open standards and vendor-neutral protocols. The integrated nature of SDN as compared to traditional networks, IT organizations can switch devices up to already configured devices to cut on capital costs (Yan, Yu, Gong & Li 2016).
SDN has architectural components which include applications with interfaces that programmes the network through use of logic and NBI drivers (Northbound Interface) , SBI (Southbound Interface) and controllers which are centrally located so a to translate in commands from the SDN applications an overview of the network has NBI drivers, control logic and Data plane interface. IBN is characterized by translation and validation which enables translation of commands in the form of network administrators to actions performable by software. Another IBN characteristic is that it has a manager that carries out automated implementation through a software which makes use of existing resources by manipulation and thereby enforcing policies. IBN also has the ability to gather data and manage the network’s state through constant monitoring. IBN also makes sure that a certain standard of the network remains through dynamic optimization and input correction action. These characteristics have enabled use of IBN reduce the complax way traditional drivers used to manage networks thus ultimately reducing capital and operational costs. (Saha et al, 2018).
IBN allows users to make their own standard of how a certain network should operate by the input of automated network policies. This is because they come in the form of hardware which is diagnostic and has clearly put out uses. This has caused the reduction of the time prototypes are developed. This in turn reduces the operational cost used in this development.
